Skills and experience

Geno Fernandez is Zurich’s Chief Underwriting Officer in North America. He is responsible for underwriting, risk selection, pricing, portfolio management, predictive analytics and the management of the product suite offered by Zurich in North America. He was named to his current position in 2016. Fernandez joined Zurich in 2012 as the Head of Strategic Execution for North America. His responsibilities included developing and driving the execution of Zurich’s strategy, as well as leading operational planning and chairing operating reviews for all businesses and shared services. He joined Zurich from McKinsey & Company, where he was a senior partner and a leader in the Insurance Practice. There, he had 13 years of experience in serving insurance companies in corporate strategy, operations and major transactions. He has served as a special attaché for economic affairs to the Secretary of State in the diplomatic staff at the Vatican and as a lecturer at New College, Oxford, and a counselor at a women's shelter in Indiana.

External appointments

Fernandez is a leader on local and national non-profit boards, including the National Leadership Roundtable, and an executive committee member of the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Chicago Catholic School Board, which governs and operates 250 elementary and high schools in the Chicago area. He has served on the Boards of Cristo Rey and the Catholic Extension Society, and has actively worked with Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society and as a counselor at a women’s shelter in Indiana.

Educational background

A Rhodes Scholar, Fernandez has a Doctorate in Philosophy from Oxford University and a bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame.
