Zurich North America adds new technical underwriting capabilities to its cyber insurance practice

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., July 4, 2017

Will focus on defining new cyber risks and solutions across all lines of business

Zurich North America today announced it has hired Yosha DeLong as vice president of cyber underwriting, a role that expands Zurich’s cyber resources as the full scope of cyber exposures continue to evolve beyond data security.

“Businesses want to understand their risks associated with cyber security issues: the full scope of their exposures and how best to protect themselves and their customers,” said Brian Winters, head of Specialty Products for Zurich North America. “With the rapid growth of the Internet of Things, the potential for many new types of cyber related losses, including property damage, bodily injury and business interruption, are emerging. Zurich continues to refine its understanding of the exposures so it can make thoughtful decisions on solutions. Adding Yosha to the team definitely helps build out our resources.”

DeLong leads the continued development of these cyber risk efforts, which includes coordinating and monitoring cyber as a peril across all lines of business. She also is accountable for the performance of the Security & Privacy portfolio through technical underwriting strategy and governance; product development; risk selection; and pricing. Reporting to Joe Sullivan, Technical Director, Professional, Health, Accident and Warranty, she is based in Schaumburg, IL, but will spend time in New York, New Jersey and Chicago as well.

DeLong was most recently the London Regional Executive for Ironshore Europe Limited, overseeing all IronPro product lines for US business written through London. She has more than 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry, having worked as both an underwriter and broker.

Zurich works to provide services for their customers to help them better understand and protect themselves from cyber related risks. As one of the five insurance providers currently leading the North American cybersecurity insurance market, Zurich has its finger on the pulse of the current cyber landscape and is invested in identifying risks and delivering solutions for its customers.

Zurich also is involved in a "first of its kind" public private partnership with the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop a Cyber Portal to help businesses build resilience against cyber-related supply chain risks. In August 2016, Zurich announced new cyber insurance solutions for Captives and in October released results of its 2016 Advisen cyber survey of U.S.-based risk managers on their cyber-related attitudes.

Zurich also serves as a key contributor to the public sector dialogue around cyber insurance including presenting to the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI) and IT/Communications Sector Quad and participating in Department of Homeland Security and Department of Treasury Roundtables on the topic. In 2015, Zurich provided testimony on the state of the cyber insurance market at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance and Data Security in Washington, D.C. Zurich cyber specialists are frequent speakers at events on issues related to security and privacy; and the Internet of Things.
