Zurich North America calls for U.S. and Canadian insurtech startups to compete in first-ever Zurich Innovation World Championship

Schaumburg, Ill., September 5, 2018

New global competition seeks innovations in the fields of mobility, smart homes and buildings, digital health, financial planning, and a wild card category

Zurich North America is seeking top startups and entrepreneurs in the insurtech space to represent the United States and Canada and compete in the first-ever Zurich Innovation World Championship (the Championship).

Running in more than 20 countries worldwide, the Championship aims to identify and potentially support and amplify innovations in the fields of mobility, smart homes and buildings, digital health, and financial planning. An additional wild card category is also available.

Startups have until September 30, 2018 to apply via the Championship webpage.

“From Silicon to Ottawa Valley, and from high tech incubators to people’s garages and basements, North America is rife with innovations and ideas that can transform the insurance industry, pushing it into the future,” said Anurag Batta, head of Strategy, Innovation and Business Development for Zurich North America. “We’re seeking innovators who can augment our own innovation capabilities and offer new and truly valuable products and services for our customers.”

Winners of the Championship will have the opportunity to pilot their innovation with Zurich's customers in a country of their choice. If the pilot proves successful, Zurich will help scale the service across regional or global markets.

The Championship opened on Aug. 30, with the overall winners in each country going on to regional rounds in either North America, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. The winners of the regional rounds will then take part in a final, global competition in February 2019. Gold, silver and bronze winners of the global round will each receive the resources to implement a pilot program with Zurich customers.

Winners will be selected by juries of subject matter experts, innovation leaders and senior business executives.

“We’re looking for something that will excite us and meet not only our customers’ current needs but help predict and guide their future needs,” said Sumeet Bhatia, head of Innovation for Zurich North America. “And with the wild card category, the possibilities are endless.”

Bhatia added, “This is a compelling opportunity for startups to leverage Zurich’s scale and leadership to take their insurtech service to the next level.”
