Zurich Canada names new Chief Actuary

Industry veteran will help design strategy for Zurich Canada actuarial services.

Lucas KouryLucas Koury has been appointed Chief Actuary for Zurich Canada.

Koury will start with Zurich Aug. 6 in the Toronto office and report directly to Zurich North America Executive Vice President & Chief Actuary Bob Effinger.

He will support Zurich Canada CEO Saad Mered and the rest of the Zurich Canada Executive Committee to help design the strategy for Canada’s actuarial services, and he will help in designing, developing and executing leadership in pricing and reserving strategy for Canada.

Koury comes to Zurich with 15 years of actuarial experience. He worked as an Aon-Hewitt intern and has served in leadership roles at AXA Canada and NCA and, most recently, as director of Actuarial Services at PwC Canada.

“Given Lucas’ actuarial acumen, we are confident that he will enhance our technical expertise in actuarial valuation, accounting standards, risk pricing and capital modeling greatly,” Effinger said. “Not only will he fill his role well, but we believe that his background will allow him to serve as an excellent mentor for developing actuarial professionals.”

Koury received his Bachelor in Actuarial Mathematics and Finance from Concordia University, Montréal. Over the course of his career he has earned designations from the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. He currently resides as a member of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries’ Property and Casualty Financial Reporting Committee.
