Zurich’s risk engineers connect with thousands of construction workers during Safety Week

June 10, 2019

About 20 construction workers suffer a fatal accident on the job each week. As the largest construction insurer in the United States, Zurich North America works with its customers to help reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on construction sites.

That’s why Zurich was the lead insurance sponsor of Construction Safety Week (May 6-10), an initiative supported by more than 70 national and global construction firms. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of the construction industry’s ongoing commitment to eliminate worker injuries.

During the five-day event, Zurich’s risk engineers participated in safety walks at construction projects across the country and conducted safety meetings. In all, the risk engineers connected with more than 5,350 insured workers, which is nearly triple the number of workers Zurich reached during the 2018 Safety Week.

“We’ve sponsored Construction Safety Week since it launched in 2014,” said Jon Tate, head of Construction Risk Engineering. “When the construction industry and their insurance providers collaborate, workers are safer and the industry is that much stronger.”

Rick Zellen, senior risk engineering consultant, coordinated Zurich's Construction Safety Week activities this year, working with the theme ”Safe by Choice.”

“Safety on a construction site ultimately requires teamwork to create a culture that fosters continuous improvement to ensure that everyone gets home safely after every shift,” Zellen said. “Construction Safety Week is a good refresher of the things we need to do every day to keep our job sites and our employees safe.”
