Community impact

Protection isn’t just our product

It’s our passion. That’s why Zurich employees give beyond expectations. Since 2012, our employees have volunteered 195,833 hours to nonprofits that align with our vision and values, including our six core charities, the disaster resilience nonprofit SBP, and nearly 400 local nonprofits. Since 2012, our employees have given $2.4 million during workplace fundraisers and our annual A Time for Giving campaign. Our matching gift program doubled that sum.

Alonzo Durham
Operations, Chicago

Alonzo’s selection as Zurich’s 2019 Volunteer of the Year is based on the critical role he has played at YANA House, an intervention recovery home in Chicago that helps men recover from drug and alcohol addiction by providing a structured, safe and affordable living environment. Alonzo has been involved with YANA House for 12 years. "Living a life of service to others has afforded me the opportunity to meet and interact with a variety of people that are now important figures in my life,” said Alonzo.

A meeting of missions, muscle and minds: SBP

Mission-related giving and skills-based volunteering magnify our impact. That’s why we support New Orleans-based SBP, a nonprofit founded after Hurricane Katrina. Zurich teams helped SBP rebuild nearly 100 homes after Katrina and Superstorm Sandy. Then, in 2014 Zurich awarded a $3 million grant so SBP could expand its reach through disaster preparedness training. Our teams sprang into action to share their skills:

  • Our Risk Engineers and Learning & Development team helped SBP develop training content.

  • Our Underwriters and Predictive Analytics team helped identify communities that could benefit from the training.

  • Our marketing team filmed a video to share SBP’s insights, just before the record-breaking 2017 hurricane season.

See the results of our collaboration and learn how you can prepare your home for greater resilience.

Our core charities

We currently identify six national nonprofits as our core charities. Together, they represent our philanthropic focus: building the resilience of communities and promoting people’s health and well-being.
