NIST and Cyber Risk Underwriting

Credits / Hours: 2

The insurance industry has been in the process of developing, introducing and improving a broad range of cybersecurity risk-management and insurance tools over the past 20 years. But one of the biggest challenges for insurers is diagnosing the relative strength of an organization’s existing cybersecurity program. Having a robust, comprehensive framework for conducting such an evaluation is critical during the cyber-insurance underwriting process. That analysis helps insurers develop the most cost-effective cyber risk and insurance management programs.

One such framework is the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity. The Framework is a voluntary, risk-based set of industry standards and best practices designed to help organizations manage cybersecurity risks. NIST, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, created the Framework to help promote organizational efficiency, innovation and economic prosperity while promoting safety, security, business confidentiality, privacy and civil liberties.

Many insurance providers are integrating Framework principles into their cybersecurity underwriting process. This program reviews these principles and is designed to help brokers understand this methodology, how it impacts information needs and its overall impact on the cyber-related underwriting decision-making process. Brokers who understand the NIST Framework will be better positioned to facilitate and optimize outcomes for clients needing a broad range of cyber coverages.

Program highlights:

  • Identify current and emerging cybersecurity threats and common areas of organizational vulnerability.
  • Understand the history and purpose of the NIST Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity and how the principles in the Framework can be applied to the cybersecurity underwriting process.
  • Learn how brokers can use the Framework to facilitate the cybersecurity underwriting process to achieve optimal outcomes for their clients (maximum policy limits and broadest possible coverage terms for the lowest possible price).
  • Learn best practices for establishing or improving a cybersecurity risk-management program.
