Headshot of Jamie BuolWe invited Jamie Boul, a newer member of the Zurich Programs team, to share more about her background an experiences with us.

Q: Can you tell us about your journey into the insurance industry and what drew you to programs specifically?

My family worked in insurance, so I always thought, "No way, not for me!" But nevertheless, life has a funny way of modifying your expectations. I've spent my entire career at Zurich, and I absolutely love it. I regularly tell college students not to overlook this industry because the opportunities are vast and rewarding.

My journey has always been intertwined with underwriting. I started in a support role, moved up to being an underwriter, and found myself passionate about our company and the role. This led me to an underwriting training role, where I had the opportunity to develop & coach underwriters across the organization.

One day, we had the Programs team come in to talk to our new underwriting trainees, and their business model immediately piqued my interest. I knew I had to follow up and learn more about it, and the rest is history!

Q: Could you provide some insight into your role and responsibilities as a program manager?

My primary responsibility is to ensure that our programs successfully achieve their specific goals. This involves a multifaceted approach, requiring organization and strategic planning. I collaborate closely with the PA as well as various internal colleagues to drive initiatives forward. Whether it's discussing strategies to attract new business or optimizing data feeds with internal stakeholders, each day presents unique challenges and opportunities. The dynamic nature of my role keeps me engaged and allows me to leverage my skills in problem-solving, communication, and leadership to propel our programs toward success.

Q: What’s a career moment you’re proud of that has helped you in your current role?

Initially, in my support role for underwriters, I found myself in a relatively taxing environment which could be intense and demanding. I vividly remember thinking, is this truly the career path I want to pursue? However, I didn't let that initial hesitation stop me. Embracing the challenge, I took the leap and became an underwriter, a decision that has proven to be pivotal in my career. The experience I gained in that role was invaluable, teaching me the intricacies of underwriting and honing my skills. I owe much of my growth to an exceptional manager and mentor who guided me through the process. This defining step not only equipped me with critical expertise and foundational knowledge, but also instilled a resilience and determination that continue to drive my success today.

Q: What lessons have you learned in your role as a program manager?

Be flexible and lean on your team when you need help. In a role like this, there’s a wealth of knowledge amongst my colleagues and we’re more than willing to share ideas.

Q: To what behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success?

I'd say a combination of tenacity and perseverance. I'd attribute both of those traits to being involved in athletics for most of my life. Whether the goals are personal, or career related, the fact remains that you need a certain amount of doggedness to achieve success. If you're willing to put in the hard work, the results will come.

Q: What is the best advice you were given?

This may seem commonplace but "mind over matter". It's something my parents used regularly, and it has always made me cognizant of what I can control versus what I can't. Comes in handy in a lot of scenarios that life throws at you.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I absolutely love running or working out. It's even more enjoyable when my husband joins me or I get to bring one of the kids along for a fun family run. Fitness and family time all rolled into one—what's not to love?

Q: What’s one book, podcast or TV show you think everyone should check out right now?

For an inspiring and engaging recommendation, I highly suggest checking out Molly Fletcher's podcasts. I recently had the pleasure of hearing her speak at the Zurich Classic Executive Women's Day event, and I was absolutely captivated. Molly Fletcher, a former sports agent turned motivational speaker, brings a unique blend of energy, authenticity, and wisdom when she speaks. Her storytelling is not only compelling but also incredibly relatable, as she shares her life experiences and lessons learned in a manner that is both down-to-earth and entertaining.
